May 28 is a significant date in the history of Harvey Community Radio 96.5fm.
On this day in 2003, the station’s Foundation Committee was officially formed — a milestone that helped shape the future of community broadcasting in the Harvey Region.
What began with discussions in 1999 with the Australian Broadcasting Authority would eventually lead to the establishment of the first Community Radio Station in the South West of Western Australia, right here in Harvey.
The Foundation Committee members — David Marshall, Deb Booker, Joe Capogreco, Kathy O’Shaughnessy, Brian Halliday, Brian Taylor, Sue Marshall, Derek Jesson, Jenny Taylor and Nick Vitalone — met weekly for nearly two years to plan, fundraise and bring the vision of a local radio station to life.
With support from Harvey Mainstreet Inc, local businesses, volunteers, community members and grant funding from the South West Development Commission, Harvey Community Radio 96.5fm officially went to air on 12 June 2004.
Since then, the station has become an important part of community life — broadcasting 24 hours a day, supporting local events, sharing local stories, training volunteers, preserving oral histories through “Sounds Like Harvey,” and providing a voice for the Harvey Region.
Over the years, Harvey Community Radio has also received numerous local, state and national awards recognising its outstanding contribution to community broadcasting, volunteerism, youth development and inclusion.
Today, we acknowledge and thank the original Foundation Committee, the volunteers past and present, presenters, sponsors and loyal listeners who continue to make Harvey Community Radio 96.5fm “Your Town Talking.”
🎙️ Happy Foundation Day Harvey Community Radio 96.5fm!
